ALTER | HTV took part in the 32nd FED Conference on September 18, 2024 with a presentation on “PFAS ban & possible strategies to counter the problem”.
Dr.-Ing. Thorsten Leist informed about the following content:
Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl compounds (PFAS compounds) have been used in numerous applications since the 1950s due to their superior stability under chemical and thermal environmental influences; from coatings and chemicals for firefighting to sealing materials and medical applications. They are also widely used in the electronics industry as encapsulation and insulation materials. The application for the restriction of PFAS, which has been submitted to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), potentially presents many companies with the task of finding substitutes for their applications. Many are already starting to look for alternatives to PFAS products in order to anticipate the impending ban. The presentation briefly summarizes the planned PFAS ban and highlights possible strategies to counter the problem. PFAS substitutes have to meet many requirements, so proving their suitability is a key aspect. Possibilities for the identification of potential substitutes and the qualification of corresponding materials for the respective application are shown.
